Mini Course - Animal Sourcing

If you’re getting ready to buy a livestock project animal, you already know that choosing the right animal can affect the whole season. Unfortunately, most families make the mistake of shopping from cute photos, seller opinions, or what is available first, but without knowing that the goal comes before the animal, you can spend money on an animal that may not fit your student, timeline, fair rules, facilities, or experience level.

This beginner-friendly virtual workshop helps agricultural educators, youth leaders, students, and families understand how to find appropriate livestock and small animal projects with more confidence.

Instead of focusing on one species, this workshop gives a practical sourcing system that can be used for cattle, lambs, goats, pigs, chickens, turkeys, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs. You’ll learn where to look for animals, how to build a local contact network, what questions to ask breeders or sellers, and how to help first-year exhibitors slow down before committing to an animal.

Throughout the workshop, we’ll cover common livestock and small animal terms, how to delegate tasks, breeder communication scripts, red flags and green flags, fair timeline planning, basic paperwork reminders, and first-week precautions after an animal comes home. The goal is not to make every participant an expert judge overnight. The goal is to help you ask better questions, compare options more thoughtfully, and support safer, more informed project decisions.

By the end, you’ll have a clearer plan for helping students and families source project animals, prepare before pickup, verify fair or program requirements, and use the Animal Selection Spreadsheet to organize contacts, notes, and next steps.
