Hoof trimming can feel intimidating when you are not sure what to look for, what supplies to use, or how much to trim.
Hoof Trimming Basics for Lambs and Goats is a beginner-friendly course that teaches youth handlers and families how to approach routine hoof care with a clear plan, safe preparation, and proper supervision.
Students learn why hoof care matters, how to gather the right supplies, how to prepare the animal and work area, how to identify basic hoof anatomy, and how to follow a step-by-step trimming routine using small, careful cuts.
The course also teaches one of the most important livestock skills: knowing when to stop.
Students learn to recognize pink tissue, bleeding, unusual odor, swelling, discharge, unsafe animal behavior, and other situations that mean it is time to pause and ask an experienced adult or veterinarian for help.
By the end of the course, students and families will have a more organized hoof care routine and a better understanding of how responsible hoof care fits into the overall care of a lamb or goat project.
This course is designed to support basic maintenance hoof care. It does not diagnose or treat hoof disease, severe lameness, infection, or complicated hoof problems.
Best For
Youth exhibitors, first-time lamb and goat families, FFA students, 4-H members, Grange students, parents, teachers, advisors, and beginner livestock owners.
Course Transformation
Go from nervous and unsure about hoof trimming to prepared, safer, and more confident with a clear routine for basic lamb and goat hoof care.
